Trust in our Lord
So how do we continue to trust in God during this life’s journey? One important way is with prayer. When you alone or you and a loved one face decisions that are so difficult to resolve, we need to let God know of our doubt and dilemma. By doing this we let God know our dependence on His promise to help us when “In all our ways we acknowledge Him, and He will make our paths straight.” Proverbs 3:6
Another way we build our trust in God is to flee from evil and seek to put Him first in our lives. It is not always easy to resist temptation when our interactions with social media, TV programs, movies, books, etc. can lead us to form some bad habits and make wrong choices. There are so many verses in the Bible that warn us or instruct us to flee from evil. Here are just a few you can read ( Hebrews 13:5, Psalm 37:27-29, Proverbs 4:14-15 and 4:26-27 ). As Timothy tells us to shun evil by “fleeing from our youthful lusts, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.” 2 Timothy 2:22
In our culture that is “selfie” obsessed and has a me-first mindset, God is often put in the back seat of our goal driven lives. It is certainly good to strive to be the best with the talents, time and treasures given us. God wants us to use them to do our best while being a humble servant using kindness and truth to do His will. Sometimes our selfish drive to possess money, social rank and/or fame causes us to put God on the bench. But, we know He should be the “captain” of our team. Matthew the former tax collector for the Roman Empire reminds us “no one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other or he will hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Matthew 6:24
Finally, we have a couple of sources to help guide and strengthen our trust. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit to the church, the body of believers , after He ascended to heaven. “But this Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my Name, He will teach you all things.” John 14:26 Isn’t it comforting to know that we have the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Even in the dark days we always have the Spirit to remind us that God is right there with us.
Finally, we also have holy scripture, God’s word. We can go to seek answers when we go to God’s word. It is true and it is unchanging. If we are questioning our faith or starting to lose some trust, then we must go to scripture for reassurance. So know that our trust in our Lord is certain. He will never fail or forsake us, but will love us. Amen
